Who runs this app
Deutsch Schreiben is run by Mohammed Majed Ibrahim, Cairo, Egypt. Questions about your data: deutschschreiben492@gmail.com.
Your account
To use the app you create an account with your email address and a password, or sign in with Google (or another listed provider). If you use Google, it shares your name, email address and profile picture with us; we never see your Google password. We store, with your account:
- your email address (to sign you in, confirm your address and reset your password),
- the name, country and age you enter, whether you're a student, working or other, how you heard about us, why you're learning German, how long you've studied it, the highest level you've studied, and your study plan (exam timeline and daily goal),
- how you signed up (email or Google) and the type of device you signed up on (for example "mobile, Android") — never your exact device or browser details,
- any feedback you send us (bug reports, ideas, complaints), with your device type and app version so we can fix problems,
- your learning progress: placement-test result, XP, streak, finished exercises, mistakes and review plan, so you can continue on any device,
- any rating and comment you choose to give the app.
We use this only to run the app, to tailor your lessons and to understand and improve the app (for example, which countries and levels our learners come from). We never sell it or use it for advertising. Your password is stored only in encrypted (hashed) form; we cannot see it. You must be at least 13 years old to create an account; we ask you to confirm this before an account is made, and if you tell us you are younger, the account and everything stored with it is deleted straight away.
Accounts and this data are stored with Supabase, on servers in Frankfurt, Germany (EU). A copy of your progress is also kept in your browser, or on your phone when you use the iPhone or Android app, so the app works quickly and offline.
The AI tutor and answer checking
When you send a message to the tutor, your message, the recent conversation, your placement level and any photo you attach are sent through our server to Anthropic, whose Claude AI model writes the reply. If that service is temporarily unavailable, the same request may instead be sent to Google's Gemini AI model as a backup. Google may use requests sent to Gemini to improve its products, and they may be reviewed by people at Google. When a lesson answer doesn't exactly match the expected one, the exercise and your answer are sent the same way so the AI can check whether it's also correct. Our server does not save the content of your conversations or answers. Please don't send personal information you don't want processed by an AI service.
To prevent abuse, our server briefly keeps a count of AI requests per account (for up to 24 hours, in memory only).
Payments
If you buy a plan, the payment is handled by Paddle (on the website, as merchant of record) or by Apple / Google (in the phone app), via RevenueCat which reports app-store purchases to us. They receive what they need to process the payment; we never see or store your card details. We store which plan you bought, when, the amount and currency, and until when it is active, linked to your account.
At the Paddle checkout you can tick a box to get product updates and offers from us by email. It is unticked unless you choose it, and you can unsubscribe at any time with the link in any of those emails or by writing to us.
Emails about your plan
If you buy a plan on the website, we email you a purchase confirmation and, before an automatic renewal, a reminder. These are sent with Brevo (or, as a backup, Google's Gmail), which receive your email address and the email's content. We send no newsletters or advertising emails from the app.
Hosting
The app is hosted by Render (render.com). Like any web host, it may log technical data such as your IP address and the pages requested, for security and operation.
Other services the app loads
- Icons: the icon code is served by our own server, but the icon images themselves are fetched from the Iconify API (api.iconify.design, with api.simplesvg.com and api.unisvg.com as backups), which receives your IP address when icons load. No other data is sent.
- Word lookup (Practice tab): the German word or phrase you look up is sent directly from your browser to the MyMemory translation service (mymemory.translated.net), which also receives your IP address. Nothing else is sent, and only when you use the lookup.
- Grammar videos are embedded from YouTube in privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com), and only load when you open a grammar topic that has a video.
- Voice input (microphone) uses the speech recognition built into your browser or phone. Some browsers, such as Chrome, and the speech services of Apple (iPhone) and Google (Android) may send the audio to their servers to turn it into text. Speech is only recorded while you press the mic button. When a phone has no speech recognition of its own that the app can use, the app instead records a short clip while the mic is on, and sends it through our server to Google's Gemini AI model to turn it into text (Google may use this as described under "The AI tutor" above). Our server does not save the audio or the text.
- Camera and photos (iPhone and Android app): the app only asks for access when you choose to send your tutor a photo of handwritten German. Only the photo you pick is sent, as described under "The AI tutor" above; the app doesn't look at your other photos.
- Pronunciation (the 🔊 button) uses your browser's or phone's own text-to-speech; nothing is sent to us.
Usage statistics (our own, no third parties)
To understand how the app is used and improve it, the app records simple usage events in our own database — for example "opened the app", "started a lesson", "finished a lesson (7 of 10 correct)", "used the tutor", "reached the daily goal", or "an error occurred". Each event has a time, your account (or, before you sign in, a random ID stored in your browser), and the device type, operating system family, browser family and app version.
Events never contain what you type (answers or tutor messages), your IP address, or your exact device details. If you arrive through a link, we record which site or campaign it came from (for example "instagram"), not the full address. Only the app owner can see this data, mostly as totals and charts.
No ads, no third-party tracking
The app uses no advertising, no third-party analytics and no tracking cookies. It stores your sign-in session in your browser or on your phone so you stay signed in.
Your rights
You can see and change your name, country and age any time under Settings → Edit profile. You can delete your account and all its data yourself in the iPhone and Android app under Settings → Delete account. To get a copy of your data, or to delete your account from the website, email deutschschreiben492@gmail.com from the address you signed up with — we'll do it within 30 days. This also covers any other request under data-protection laws such as the GDPR or Egypt's Personal Data Protection Law.
